Twitter: and Instagram: Follow us! The Solar Orbiter mission is a M-class ESA mission from the COSMIC Vision Program, launched successfully on February 2020. It will also enable diagnostics of the solar atmosphere plasma composition, and will link the solar wind stream composition detected in-situ with other instruments aboard the spacecraft. In particular, it will provide a complete temperature coverage from the low chromosphere to the flaring corona as its passbands are dominated by emission lines from several different ionized atoms (e.g. The paper describing the find appears in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. SOLAR ORBITER SERIESThis is the first of a series of Venus flybys that will allow Solar Orbiter to access higher latitude more polar regions of the Sun. This remote-sensing instrument will investigate the extreme ultraviolet light from the Sun, deciphering the activity taking place in the different layers of our star's atmosphere. Solar Orbiter performed a gravity assist flyby at Venus on 4 September, enabling the spacecraft to adjust its orbit around the Sun. Other ESTRACK stations such as New Norcia in Australia and Cebreros in Spain. The mission will be controlled from the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC), Darmstadt, Germany, using ESA’s Malargüe ground-station. S P I C E is essential for this objective. Solar Orbiter will eventually view the poles from an angle higher than 30 degrees, compared to 7 degrees at best from Earth. Tracing structures in the heliosphere, the magnetic bubble in which the solar system exists, all the way to their solar origin is the number one objective of the Solar Orbiter mission. Solar Orbiter is a planned European Space Agency (ESA) mission that will study the surface of the sun. It is a European-led instrument with different partners across Europe and the USA participating in the SPICE consortium. Equipped with a suite of ten instruments, Solar Orbiter will capture the closest ever pictures of our star, the first images of its poles, and make detailed observations of solar activity. The S Pectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment or S P I C E instrument is an imaging spectrometer on board the Solar Orbiter mission. ![]()
